Foaming is always the best application method, but the equipment required is expensive.  Using a new unused (plastic) pump sprayer is recommended to keep costs manageable.  The coverage area varies with each application.  One person can spray it heavier than another covering less square footage. A rule of thumb is approximately 500-600 square feet for five gallons.
